Oregano Oil: What you should know

Oregano is one of those herbs that most of us have in our pantry. After all, what good would a tomato sauce taste without a dash of oregano? But this herb is about more than just tasting good. Oregano oil has wide reaching health benefits.

This powerful oil can do a myriad of things, from helping to fight colds through to keeping your digestive tract healthy.

Here are just some of things you should know about Oregano Oil…

It comes straight from the herb.

Whenever you’re using an essential oil, it’s important to make sure that you use a good quality, pure oil. Oregano oil of course comes from the herb and it’s extracted by steam distillation. There are more than 40 variations of the oregano plant but it’s said that the oil from the Oreganum vulgare holds the most therapeutic benefit.

Top fact: It takes over 1,000 pounds of wild oregano to produce just one pound of oregano oil.

It’s great for respiratory illness.

Got a cold? Feel stuffy? Then a couple of drops of oregano oil in a diffuser will help ease the symptoms and clear your airways. You can also add one drop in to some honey and then top up with hot water to provide relief for sore throats.

We recommended that you do not take oregano internally for more than 10 days.

It’s Anti-Fungal.

Oregano oil is used to treat fungus and candida. Medical studies have shown that the oil kills off candidiasis, that bacteria or fungus that can grow within your system, and thus works as an antifungal.

It’s also a natural remedy if you suffer from toenail fungus. Just a few drops daily on the infected area and you’ll see within a couple of weeks that the oregano will work its magic.

It’s great for your body.

Oregano is what we call a “hot” oil, that means because of it’s strong properties, it can - and will - burn the skin unless it’s diluted with a carrier oil.

To use it to relieve aching muscles, dandruff and joint pain, just dilute 10 drops per 30ml of carrier oil just as jojoba or sweet almond before massaging in to the affected area.

It’s a natural insect repellent.

If you like to travel or you hate those pesky bugs come summertime then oregano is the perfect oil for you. It contains a compound called carvacrol which is a natural insect repellent. Scatter a few drops around your surroundings or using the mixture above make a repellent for your skin.

It’s an Antioxidant.

Oregano oil has plenty of antioxidant properties. In fact, it actually features in the top 10 list of antioxidant herbs. So if you want to age slow and live longer, this oil is your best friend.

These are just a few reasons why oregano oil is so worthwhile. But again, just a quick reminder, be sure to buy a high quality oil and don’t use internally unless you’re unwell and never internally for more than 10 days.
